Based on the novel of the same name by co-writer Sam Greenlee, the film was pulled from distribution with Grenlee contending the underseen film was shelved by the FBI. Shot guerrilla-style in secrecy by Dixon, most of the funding for the underground classic came from Black Americans desiring to see a film like this.
