Pinky

On the path to ascension, Black people across time have grappled with a similar question: How can I be the promise of my relatives' dreams and my own? Kazan’s 1949 “Pinky” grapples with this question through the lens of passing-for-white Pinky Johnson fleeing back home to the South after receiving a Northern education in nursing, fearing that her White doctor beau will discover she’s colored. Once in the South, Pinky wrestles with the privileges and burdens afforded to her because of her skin color and her community’s reception to her return.
