Lilies of the Field

On a remote farm, a former military man (Sidney Poitier) selflessly gives himself to improve the condition of a convent after his car breaks down. The convent’s Mother Superior believes God has sent the man to bless them. The film asserts issues of race through humorous interactions between Mother Superior and Sidney’s character.

During the height of the civil rights movement, Sidney Poitier won an Academy Award for his role in “Lilies of the Field.” He became the first Black actor in a leading role to win.
